Ann Arbor Light Rail - A Vision for the Future
As Ann Arbor continues to grow, the need for efficient and sustainable transportation solutions becomes increasingly important. One such solution is the implementation of a small light rail system that can better serve the mobility needs of both residents and visitors. This post explores how and why Ann Arbor should consider light rail as a viable option for its future transit plans.
The Case for Light Rail
Light rail systems offer several advantages over traditional bus services and even Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems. These include:
- Increased Capacity: Light rail vehicles can carry more passengers than buses, reducing congestion and improving the overall efficiency of the transit system.
- Environmental Benefits: Light rail systems produce fewer emissions compared to buses, contributing to cleaner air and a healthier environment.
- Economic Development: Light rail can stimulate economic growth by attracting businesses and development along its corridors.
- Improved Reliability: Light rail systems often have dedicated tracks, reducing delays caused by traffic congestion and providing more reliable service.
Updating AAATA's Plans
The Ann Arbor Area Transportation Authority (AAATA) has existing plans for Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) along two key corridors: north/south from Plymouth Road to Briarwood Mall, and east/west from Ypsilanti to Downtown Ann Arbor. While BRT is a step in the right direction, we believe that these corridors should be developed with light rail instead.
North/South Corridor: Plymouth Road to Briarwood Mall
This corridor connects some of the most important destinations in Ann Arbor, including the University of Michigan's North Campus, the downtown area, and the Briarwood Mall. A light rail system along this route would provide a fast, reliable, and efficient way for students, workers, and shoppers to travel between these key locations.
East/West Corridor: Ypsilanti to Downtown Ann Arbor
The east/west corridor links Ypsilanti with Downtown Ann Arbor, serving a diverse population and connecting major employment centers, educational institutions, and residential areas. Implementing light rail along this route would enhance connectivity, reduce travel times, and support the region's economic development.
Conclusion
By updating the AAATA's existing BRT plans to include light rail, Ann Arbor can create a more efficient, sustainable, and attractive transit system. This investment in light rail will not only improve mobility for residents and visitors but also contribute to the city's long-term growth and prosperity. It's time for Ann Arbor to embrace a vision for the future that includes a right-sized light rail system.
Let's work together to make this vision a reality and ensure that Ann Arbor remains a vibrant, connected, and sustainable community for years to come.
